LASIK (Laser Assisted In-Situ Keratomlieusis)

LASIK is the most popular Laser Eye Surgery for the correction of neasrsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. Traditional LASIK Eye Surgery provides safe, effective and predictable correction of these common vision problems. For those patients who suffer either have visual symptoms of higher order aberrations or who demonstrate the presence of higher order aberrations on their aberrometry examination, Custom LASIK may be the best choice.

Custom Wavefront LASIK Eye Surgery readily corrects not only nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism, but can also correct the higher order aberrations that may cause problems with night driving or doubling of images, especially at night.

LASIK was first performed in 1989 by an Ophthalmologist in Greece and shortly thereafter was introduced to American  LASIK surgeons in 1990.

The first step in the LASIK procedure is to place a few eyedrops on the eye to numb its surface. This makes the procedure quite comfortable. The entire procedure generally takes about 15 minutes per eye.

After the numbing drops are instilled, the LASIK surgeon will create a very fine layer through about one third of the front surface of the cornea. This forms a "flap" of clear tissue on the central area of the front surface of the eye under which the laser energy can be placed.

Once this flap is created, the surgeon removes the microkeratome and gently folds the flap, exposing the underlying corneal tissue.
The Excimer Laser is guided by software that causes the proper shape to be formed in order to  alter the curvature of the cornea to achieve the desired optical correction. If you are having Custom LASIK, the software will be guided bu the digital measurments taken by the aberrometer and will produce a totally unique shape that will correct the higher order aberrations.
After the Excimer Laser has been applied, the cornea will have the new shape necessary to for the correction of whatever prescription and aberrations were to be corrected and the flap can gently be returned to its original position.
The flap is gently laid back into position over the treated corneal tissue. Because of the natural bonding qualities of the cornea, there are no stitches required for the LASIK treatment.

After your treatment, an eye shield will be applied to help protect the eye from accidental bumping or rubbing. During the first 24 - 48 hours, you may experience a mild "something in the eye" sensation. Most patients are able to pass a driver's test without their glasses within the first couple of days after their treatment.

There are a number of factors that might make you a good or poor candidate for LASIK. These include: your prescription, the health of your eyes, the thickness of your corneas, the size of your pupils, the health and integrity of your tearfilm, and MOST IMPORTANTLY THE SPECIFIC LIFESTYLE NEED YOU WISH TO ACCOMPLISH through the elimination or your dependence on glasses or contacts.

The best way to determine whether you are a candidate for Laser Eye Surgery and specifically, a candidate for LASIK, is to have a thorough examination and consultation so that the necessary diagnostic testing can be performed and all of your questions can be answered. LASIK Eye Surgery is a safe and effective alternative to glasses and contact lenses when you are thoroughly examined and deemed to be a good candidate by an experienced LASIK surgeon .
