Laser Eye Surgery to correct common focusing problems such as nearsightedness, has been performed in the United States since 1995. In the late 1990's, LASIK rapidly became the Laser Eye Surgery of choice for most patients wishing to eliminate their dependence on glasses and contact lenses. Eye surgeons and particularly LASIK surgeons have been fortunate in having access to a fairly continuous stream of advanced technology aimed at making LASIK surgery safer, more predictable and providing the promise of improving results for patients. In 2003, a technology called wavefront guided laser eye surgery allowed for the introduction of Wavefront LASIK or Custom LASIK. Custom Wavefront LASIK makes use of an instrument called an aberrometer that measures not only the simple refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism, but also measures more complex optical distortions called aberrations. With Wavefront guided LASIK, these aberrations can not only be measured, but actually corrected by the laser. The information contained in this site is an introduction to Custom Laser Eye Surgery. As with any type of LASIK Eye Surgery, a thorough examination and consultation is necessary to find out if you are a candidate.
